Russian Dolls

Matryoshka Dolls are a relatively new phenomenon in the context of Russian history in spite of the fact it became an iconic Russian symbol.  In the late 1890’s a 5 set nesting doll appeared at the Children’s Education workshop in Moscow. The word “Matryoshka” itself is related to the Russian word “mat”, meaning “mother”. Since 1904 the centre of Children’s Education was transferred to the town of Sergiev- Posad. This town situated about 70km from Moscow  is the centre of matryoshka production in Russia.

The artists traditionally and mainly use gouache paint.  Some dolls are painted with tempera, acrylic or watercolor paints. The artists may also combine wood burning and paint. Painting expensive dolls the artists often use gold leaf to decorate their dolls.
